Lauren Halbrecht Chomko, March 7th, 1982 - October 27th, 2020

We are deeply saddened to share that Lauren Halbrecht Chomko, 38, a dedicated mother, teacher, writer, climber, hiker and runner died after a long battle with cancer on October 27th.

A Jersey Girl, raised in Teaneck, NJ moved to New England in 2008 and lived in Hanover, NH since 2011. She truly considered the Upper Valley home. Lauren worked as a middle school teacher in Orford, NH and most recently Lyme, NH. She was loved by her students and co-workers. This love was apparent as she kept in touch with so many of her students long after they left her classroom. She felt honored to have had the opportunity to mold so many young minds.

Lauren loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking and running with her husband Dan. She ran marathons and hiked to the top of mountains all over the country. She took up indoor rock climbing and enjoyed climbing with friends. Lauren also could strap on a pair of skis and fly down the slopes with grace and beauty. A gifted writer she could often be found quietly writing poetry in a warm cozy spot in her home.

Lauren’s ultimate accomplishment was parenting her two children Liliana (7) and Jack (4). Lauren and Liliana spent countless hours doing art projects in the home. She lived for attending Liliana’s dance classes and braved the cold to watch Liliana ice skate. Lauren was there to push Jack on the swing set in the yard and was happy to jump in a sled with him during the winter. She also built endless elaborate train tracks for Jack in the family’s basement. The three of them planted and tended to a garden the last two years and were always ecstatic when they could pick the fruits and veggies of their labor. Lauren looked forward to reading to them before bed. They truly loved their “Mama.”

Lauren was predeceased by her mother Leanna Halbrecht. She is survived by her two children (Liliana and Jack); her husband (Dan); her father (Sam); her brother (Zach) and her sister (Jess). Given the Covid pandemic, friends, family and colleagues will be invited to a “Celebration of Life” gathering when circumstances allow.

Lauren deeply believed in the importance of education. She held a bachelors degree from Rutgers, NJ and a masters degree from NYU. In lieu of flowers Lauren requested that a donation be made to the Lauren Chomko Children’s Education Fund which will be used to further her children’s education. Contributions can be made through:
