This will be my second year teaching at the Lyme School as well as my first year teaching second grade. I completed my Masters degree and teaching credential at Pepperdine University and Bachelors degree at Gonzaga University. Prior to teaching fifth grade last year, I taught 6th grade for four years at Calthorp School in Santa Monica, CA. as well as 1st and 4th grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I also had the opportunity to teach English to PreK-Seniors at a private school near Santiago, Chile for six months. I’m very excited to learn and grow with the second graders this year. Outside of teaching, I love hiking, going to the beach, reading and attempting to cook, but my absolute favorite thing to do is travel. I’ve been to 28 states and 17 countries so far!
About Second Grade
2nd graders are special because they begin to do so much more independently than in K and 1st grade, and they are very proud of what they can do. In second grade, children progress from learning how to decode to focusing more on meaning in reading. We will begin the year by reading a collection of picture books to help us set the tone for what we want our classroom community to be. Then, we will progress to reading groups which will meet daily. In writing, students learn to create a paragraph and we work on writing informative, opinion, and narrative pieces. Math is exciting because children begin to learn to add and subtract numbers up to 1,000. We will also focus the beginning of the year instruction on number sense, meaning building strong intuition about numbers and their relationships. Social Studies and Science are integrated into reading and writing in 2nd grade, as well as integrated with Art, Technology, and Library studies. We are also lucky to have Four Winds Science volunteers come to our room each month and work with us. The social curriculum in Grade 2 is based on the Responsive Classroom model, which promotes a safe and fun classroom environment. We will also be incorporating several big buddy activities with our 5th grade friends next door this year!
