1. Call to Order
Chair Glenshaw called the meeting to order at 7:09 PM. She commented that everyone’s voice is important to be heard regarding the kindergarten discussion.

2. Business Requiring Action
A. Nomination
A motion was made and seconded (Sam Levey, Alicia Willette) to approve the nominations of Andrea Geoghean and Deb Robinson for the positions of paraprofessional aides at the Lyme School.  The motion passed unanimously.

3. Business Requiring Discussion
Full Day Kindergarten
Board members engaged in a lengthy discussion regarding the merits of full day kindergarten and the priorities of the Lyme School District especially as they were identified in the district’s strategic plan. Descriptions of the advantages of the full day kindergarten generally focused on (a) whether the school may bear some responsibility for a full day program and (b) the benefits gained by children from spending additional hours with a skilled, high-quality teacher.

The other priorities that were discussed featured the addition of a curriculum coordinator, the development of an elementary science curriculum and program, and the expansion of instructional differentiation capabilities. Principal Jeff Valence had conducted a poll among the teachers asking them to prioritize these options plus the full day kindergarten, and the results supported the differentiation and the curriculum coordination as the most popular choices.

The discussion concluded as each board member expressed his or her opinion about the full day kindergarten and the other priorities. The board agreed to continue discussion and planning.

4.  Adjournment
A motion to adjourn was made and seconded (Alicia Willette, Steve Toulmin).  The motion was passed unanimously.  The meeting adjourned at 9:45 PM.

A special meeting will be organized to continue the discussion about full day kindergarten. The next scheduled regular Lyme School Board meeting will be on October 27, 2016 at 7:00 PM.
