About Me

My name is Jennifer Wilcox. I have been with the Lyme School for 22 years. I taught first, second, and third grade in the Lyme School. I taught Kindergarten and Reading Recovery before coming to the Lyme School. I attended Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts for my undergraduate work. In 2007 I received my Master's in Education from Southern New Hampshire University.

I am married. We have a daughter who graduated from the Lyme School last year. We were honored to have her attend the Lyme School.

About First Grade

First graders grow so much during the year.  They begin the year reading simple sentences with 3-letter words, but end the year reading complex stories.  Many students are not able to write a complete sentence when they enter first grade but leave writing a paragraph with a topic sentence, some details, and a closing.  We spend much of the year taking numbers apart and putting them back together using number bonds.  We study the First Thanksgiving and are expected to sequence the important  historical facts.  Our last quarter is dedicated to mapping and learning the names of the continents and oceans.  We use Inquiry Science and Next Generation Science Standards to observe the phases of the moon; learn about states of matter; discover dinosaurs; and look for similarities and differences of parents and babies.  Finally most of our day is spent learning to be good citizens;  helpful and kind friends; and respectful students.   A safe and welcoming classroom is our first priority.
