Lyme School Handbook
School Library

The Converse Free Library is the public and school library for the town of Lyme. As the school library, a full curriculum of library skills and literature is taught weekly to children in all grades. Additionally the library is a source for books, audio books, videos, reference materials and research services.

Curriculum: The librarian and teachers work together to integrate library skills into the school curriculum. In the middle school skills are taught within classes in each of the subjects. (IE: Children come to the library during science and use a thesaurus to write a weather forecast, or the librarian uses the computer lab during 8th Grade Health class to teach the use of EBSCO, an online magazine database.) A detailed library curriculum is available at the library and school.

The catalog of the library’s collection is on-line and may be accessed via the Internet at the library’s website. The address is: http://www.lymenhlibrary.org. Children may access the library’s catalog from any classroom or the computer lab.

Interlibrary Loan: All libraries today rely on each other for books. No one library can have everything. The Converse Free Library borrows (and lends) books on Interlibrary Loan for all its patrons including students. The library receives two NHSL van deliveries a week, but InterLibrary Loan materials should be requested well in advance of an assignment due date.

Circulation Policies: Books and audios are lent for 3 weeks. Magazines are lent for 2 weeks.
All library materials may be returned at anytime to the book returns in the school lobby or outside the public library, or during a class visit.

Overdue Policy: Children are verbally reminded of overdue books weekly and receive written notices at the end of each quarter. Children may not take more books if anything on their account is overdue. We encourage children to talk with their parents about overdue material and will reinstate privileges if the parent writes or calls the library to acknowledge the problem. Bills are sent at the end of the school year if the material is not found.
